As I've gotten older and started trying to get into drawing after years of waffling about it, something that I've really come to appreciate online is art by people who are still learning the ropes. There's something really nice to see about fanart or other drawings where they might not be perfect marvels, but the artist put so much love and care into them and was eager to share that with other people, or fanfiction and writing that has its issues but has so much personality in it.

We're all learning together at the end of the day, and your sparkledogs and Mary Sues and edgelords and whatnot are all lovely because they're the product of passion.

Good job, artists. Keep up the hard work.

G - Have you ever had an OTP? If so, do you remember your first one? Who was in it?

Lol, boy, and how! I live and breathe otp’s. My very first otp was probably Seto Kaiba x Serenity Wheeler, from YuGiOh. They were the first fanfic I ever read on fanfiction.net, lol. First otp ship I ever contributed to fandom for was Sesshomaru x Kagome from Inuyasha, where I wrote my very first fics and did fanart.

Though if we want to get really cheeky, I could argue that my very first ship was the knife and the spoon, from cutlery and making them kiss as a tiny kiddo, lol.

L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves. (Characters you’re neutral about are fair game, as are characters you merely dislike. Characters that you absolutely loathe with the fire of ten thousand suns are exempt, as there is no point in giving yourself an aneurysm over a character that you hate.)

Hmmm, this is weirdly tough for me, not the complimenting part, but because I have a weird metric of how I view characters. Hm, let’s go with… Mizora. I’m overall neutral on her but I appreciate her petty bitch energy. If I were a cambion, I’d like to be as ambitious as Raphael but in reality I’d be like Mizora and I do appreciate a good petty play. It’s the Gemini in me, lol.

U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.

I have many favorites but I’ll go with Harley Quinn from Batman, Grunkle Stan from Gravity Falls, and since brainrot be real, Raphael from BG3.

Harley Quinn has been a favorite character of mine since I was a kid watching Batman the Animated Series. I’ve always been a fan of theatrical aesthetics (circus, theatre, commedia dell’arte, etc) and she’s just such a fun character. I’ve really liked over the years how she’s waffled between villain and anti-hero and how she’s not a perfect victim. Also Harley Quinn x Poison Ivy is a top tier ship.

Grunkle Stan because one of my biggest weaknesses in fiction is a sad morally grey older man but who is also protective of his family. He’s fucked up in his life so many times but he keeps trying. I’m a sucker for that. But also he’s just a great character. He’s made me laugh and cry and honestly that’s just a good criteria for any character. I’ve 100% played the fanmade Grunkle dating simulator and no regrets or shame.

And speaking of morally grey, or in this case, completely terrible older men. Raphael, my beloved. I played BG3 in its EA days and the very first time he appeared I was smitten. His voice obviously but also he had my favorite introduction into the game (and still does). The fact that his devil transformation involved a snazzy belt and different shoes is what really sold him to me. He’s so stupidly extra and it calls to my theatre kid nature, lol. I do miss the EA days of him roasting our camp 5 sec after inviting himself.

All that being said, I just enjoy his character within the game too. I like that he’s obviously a villain but he’s chill with us. In part because he wants something from us but I like that it kinda transforms for him into a double obsession. Obviously, crown comes first but there’s something just so delightfully fun about him writing about our character in his journal (entry number 2 is the stuff ships are made of). That he’s a cringefail theatre kid with daddy issues while being thousands of years old is partly what makes him endearing. I loved finding his fanfiction in his house and I love how stupidly bad his hell domination plan is (you’re doing amazing sweetie).

And one other bonus to liking his character is I got to make new friends and moots in particular in his corner of the fandom. 💖

Y - What are your secondhand fandoms (i.e., fandoms you aren’t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)?

Hm, I’d say currently, Helluva Boss, I’ve got a couple friends into that show. It’s certainly on my list of things to eventually sit down and watch but for now I see it through what my friends show me. Looks good though!

I had so much fun reading this book. It reminded me a lot of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy with all of its wacky humor and crazy space adventurous, but with its own twist and writing style. Everything about this story is colorful from the world, to the technology, to the characters and more. It had found family, crazy cooperate politics, diverse characters, relatable struggles, and a really unique depiction of the future. I found myself laughing and cheering on the characters for every page and looked forward to reading it whenever I could. I would say my only critiques are related to the prose and world building. There were a lot of times where I didn’t understand what was going or had a hard time imagining things because of the way things were described which, in turn, made some of these colorful places and things get lost in the narrative. But I believe a lot of the errors I found will be resolved in the final draft, and I honestly had such a perfect image in my head most of the time that it wasn’t hard to connect the dots during the more difficult moments. I imagined everything like a cartoon because of the energetic, over the top, and sometimes slap stick type descriptions and situations which, in my opinion, is some of the best ways to tell a story. It’s so imaginative and creative and I wish more books took that approach honestly. It makes everything seem so colorful and clear in my head.

Regarding the world-building, it felt like it lacked a tad at times since I was unsure of why a lot of things were a certain way, but all in all, I was able to pick up on the way things worked eventually. The story knew what it wanted and did a pretty good job maneuvering us through this insane galactic world.

I think where the book lacked in prose/world-building, it made up for in its characters.

Oh. My. God. These characters. I love them unbelievably. They felt like family to me and I think I almost cried at the end lol. I loved seeing how these characters developed and how they each worked together to get their happy endings. They are all such a tight-knit family who love each other dearly, and each has their own unique, 3D personalities.

First, we have Jolene, a determined, hard-working waitress at Galaxy Waffles who also does a lot more work on the ship than her job requires, but that’s just the way she is. She’s reliable, and will always go above and beyond to help her ship and her crew no matter if it’s her duty or not. I related so much to her frustration as an overworked and underpaid staff member who just wants the best for her loved ones while also struggling as a minority in this world, being held back from opportunities because of her status. I think that part specifically hit very close to home and I loved how the book covered real-world topics like that but in its own fictional way. It was a great allegory and I think, as a minority myself, it approached it realistically, respectfully, and in a way that is digestible and understandable to younger audiences while also showing it in a way where older people can be like: “yeah I understand and/or sympathize with that.”

Then we have Boris, the veteran Robot and chef of the ship, and also probably my favorite of the crew. He’s such a kind-hearted, lovable sweetheart who’s witty, sarcastic, playful, and caring. He’s always got his heart in the right place and does what he can to help his crew mates and ensure they’re all safe and happy. He warmed my heart in every scene, and I wish I could be friends with him irl lol!

Next on the list is Murph, a quirky blue alien with a jelly body and shifting abilities. They’re such a crackpot with a huge personality. Whether they’re talking/acting like a mobster from their favorite old movies, turning their hand into a calculator, or shifting into hilarious creatures/beings, they always got a laugh out of me.

Lastly, we have O.D. and Erabella. O.D being the ship’s AI, usually appearing like a holographic, sentient waffle. And Erabella being a mostly Android prick in charge of the crew’s every move. Although I hated both of them at first because of their mean-spirited and spiteful personalities, I came to love O.D. as his arc progressed and was satisfied with Erabella’s ending.

I could go on and on about more characters, but you get my point. I also really enjoyed how the book read maturely but also cleanly at the same time. It’s NA, and it did a really good job at finding a middle ground between mature content that adults could relate to while also being clean enough and digestible for teenagers.

This book was such a colorful, whimsical, chaotic adventure that had me smiling, laughing, and feeling sad for these characters every step of the way. I really recommend this book to anyone looking for an easy-to-read space adventure with humor and heart, and I hope a sequel comes out because I’d love to see what these guys do next!

How I Run My Blog!

Speed I LOVE GOING FAST!!! Of course, I take all the time I need on my replies, but I get really into it and I love having a lot of threads of any length. I never end up having to use drafts; I used to on older accounts, but it stressed me out so much I would rather just slam dunk all my replies at once in a burst of muse energy!

Replies I tend to use icons (every single one of Tinge’s are photoshopped and edited by me, as of writing this she has around 160 taken of Shadow from shorts & comics, and a handful of them made from various 3D programs/games/etc.

I don’t usually do “script” format (e.g. “ Tinge: Waffles sure sound good. *puts waffle in toaster*) because I love love loooove describing things! She also loves to get wordy, so semi to multi para is where it’s at for me!

Starters More often than not, I love to make starters! If you make a following starter for me, unless it’s just not vibing, I’ll be more than happy to respond to it! I’m more used to un-plotted stuff, but hit me up if you have any plot ideas! I’d love to hear what you have in store for this hedgehawk!

MY TIME HAS COME.

12 year old snackugaki would have given TNM an A, no question. It was right up there with Power Rangers (going through the In Space series at the time in 1997 which is the series it crossed over with, I trailed off PR around Lightspeed Rescue.)

Like at the time, ninja craze aside, a lot of children's programming had martial arts and (child) martial artists casted in shows. tl;dr I was a fighty, bitey little thing and while my father would have preferred I study wing chun which... at the time I wondered why I didn't and ended up studying aikido (It was convenience, a school club opened up because a teacher was offering TKD, Aikido and Tang Soo Do and just straight up no wing chun teachers were in the neighborhood). Suffice to say, Trini Kwan and Mei Pieh Chi chilled me the fuck out by being their level-headed selves. Lead by example at its prime.

Granted I was starting to skew on the older side of the target demographic when TNM was airing but, y'know, I love my funky li'l green dudes. And considering the tone set by the 87 cartoon (barring the red sky episodes) and the veering away from the Mirage tone in the subsequent 90s movies, TNM being as goofy as it was is simply following Turtlemania to its logical conclusion (to me, looking back as an adult; preteen me was just enjoying that squeaky chicken punching sound effect)

But 12 yo snack isn't taking this poll, 39 yo snack is, so.

I would give it a very loving C. C+ if there was an option. The Chiodo brothers did an okay job making the suits, the plastons were interesting minus Venus' sculpted little A-cups. For the time, the facial animatronics were pretty good, baby snack didn't see any difference between how TNM's faces moved than the movies. Though there are shots where eyes aren't lining up and knowing the people in the suits barely had any field of vision to work with which resulted in mishaps like

Good thing they weren't related. Which.... I waffled on whether to bring this up because I could very well write a whole goddamn thesis on this point alone but.

Yes, I know one of the big wanks over TNM was not just Venus being a fifth turtle, that Laird was adamantly and vehemently against, it was that she was explicitly stated in-show to not be related to any of the others (and also that none of the four were brothers by blood either). That it was lame she was "reduced" to a love interest. Which for that tidbit alone? Barely fuck all was paid to that point. If I had to recount it on the spot because I have and do rewatch TNM?

Donatello, and Venus, sniping at one another's field of expertise. Was barely sniping tbh because "Magic Girl" is barely insulting, it was just a fact. The second actual snipe was on her status as a fledgling "shinobi" trying to defeat a 2,000 year old vampire with special scrolls she couldn't decipher.

And depending on your stance on enemies-to-lovers, the one actual fight Donnie and Venus had because... he was playing his music too loud while she was trying to meditate.

Like for all the griping about her being "just" a love interest there was effectively fuck all in evidence for it. Those listed above are moments you could attempt to make the argument from. But only those. She fought with them the same, goofed up the same, got into shenanigans the same. She was out here with her little braid, minding her business and being a fifth turtle.

...Lemme move on because this IS becoming longer than I intended but to reiterate: Venus wasn't related to the boys in TNM, isn't related to the boys in IDW. Now she can be related to them in any of y'all's little headcanons. It doesn't have to be and frankly isn't a big deal, work out your own issues before making it everyone else's.

The characterization was sort of shallow sure, barring a few of the hallmark traits showing up during downtime for the turtles in-show. For that I'm attributing it to the Monster of the Day format they had for most of the episodes on top of there only being one season. There were only a few little threads that could've found fruit had there been a second season like originally planned. Leo and his finding a New Way to live as ninja, Shredder escaping with the golden shuriken, the Good Dragon who's still out there albeit back in the mirror trapped with the other, apparently good, dragons. Donnie having been brainwashed. Quease doing anything really.

I loved the things they tried, a whole new roster of antagonists minus the staple like Shredder. Starting the show with them being on the cusp of adulthood. Splinter having a life outside his sons and a cute friendship with a guy he plays chess in the park with. That Venus was from a different discipline than ninjutsu, and the entire worldbuilding that implies.

Sure childhood nostalgia is doing a loooot of heavy lifting in my positive attitude about the show but liiiiike everyone knows the show wasn't great, from a variety of points. It's as close to objectively bad as you can get for a show.

So like, and? Nothin'.

Like panning for pretty rocks, not necessarily gold with this show. I fucks with Next Mutation, and Venus is a bonus.

Acknowledging the fact that quality waxes and wanes, and even if you only watched the series partway through…

Since it’s December 19th and Korrasami is my otp (enough of one that December 19th is worth remarking upon), I want to talk a bit about how Korrasami saved shipping, and in the bigger picture, fandom for me.

Avatar The Last Airbender was my first proper fandom. Sure I enjoyed stuff before AtLA, like Start Wars and Harry Potter. But AtLA was the first fandom where I actively sought fan content online. And as fandoms go, it was a pretty good first. Except that it was also my first exposure to shipping.

See, the fandom was dominated by two major ships: Kataang and Zutara. Since these ships were mutually exclusive (remember, this was 2005 Nick cartoon), this led to a lot of fighting over which ship would be declared canon. 

A lot of fighting. 

Seriously. I don’t think I can emphasize this enough. Right up to the finale I remember watching video essays discussing why Zutara was endgame because it was thematically superior to Kataang and they CLEARLY HINTED AT IN EMBER ISLAND PLAYERS YOU GUYS THIS IS LEGIT.

So yeah. That was a pretty toxic segment of fandom. Back then, it seemed patently obvious to me Bryke wrote Katara and Aang to wind up together pretty much from the get go. Anyway, fast forward four years and we get Legend of Korra. They’ve really leaned into the shipping thing now which... okay fine. Mako waffles between Korra and Asami. I’m past caring about ships, and Mako’s Choice here isn’t really going to change my mind. Hell, I thought it was uniquely daring to have Mako and Korra break up in season two. Great! Don’t gotta worry about that nonsense anymore. Korrasami is barely a blip on my radar. Sure it’s super cute and the I think the two have great chemistry together, but it’s never going to be canon so what’s the point?

And then we get to the ending of season four, and it’s been two seasons without any obvious romantic interest for Korra. Which, to me, puts the show in a mildly interesting dilemma. What’s the plan here Bryke? Going to try and shoehorn in a Makorra ending out of some misplaced sense of obligation? Or skip the romance altogether and miss the chance to tie in thematically with AtLA’s ending? Neither one is looking like a good option. Personal preference is to go with the latter.

That’s how much of longshot this Korrasami thing was at the time. None of the ships seemed a more likely endgame.

Long story short, the internet loses it. For an entire weekend, korrasami art and fan content floods every channel I’m on. It’s incredible. All of it is brilliant. And there are so many talented creators getting spotlighted because of it. I consume as much of it as possible. And a lot of it? Is older stuff. Korrasami work that was done before the finale. Before the couple was revealed to be canon. Good thing it was too. Otherwise I would have missed all of this amazing content!

Oh. Oops.

You know how people say fandom should be fun? Yeah this. This is what they’re talking about.

Why should it matter to me which ships are canon? If I like two characters and I think they have chemistry, I don’t need a permission slip signed by the creators to enjoy shipping them. I’ll consume and create as much content as I darn well please. And if those are queer ships? 100% yes please! Give me more!

By being canon, Korrasami, ironically, managed to show me how little that should matter. It reminded me fandom was supposed to be fun. But more importantly, it showed me that as a queer girl still figuring herself out, there would always be a place for me there.

It’s been 10 years. I almost never see Kataang content. But I do enjoy the occasional Zutara fanart.

Light/older!Hope and Light/Noctis. Also Light / @dromii‘s Cloud is prob my OTP on this blog, even though Hopurai and Lightis are my jams. ( I love when a writing partner makes you love a ship that you only ever considered in passing~ )

WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO WRITE WHEN IT COMES TO SHIPPING?

All the things! Fluff, angst, smut ( so long as it’s not the sole basis for our ship ). I’m also willing to jump around/dive right in ( provided there’s some plotting ). I love both the development aspect ( though it can take a while with my muse, lbr ) and the relationship aspect.

HOW LARGE DOES THE AGE GAP HAVE TO BE TO MAKE IT UNCOMFORTABLE?

They’re fine as long as both parties are of age, but I probably wouldn’t ship Light with someone over 50 ( weird timelines/crystal stasis/immortality/etc not withstanding xD ); that would probably be where my discomfort lies.

ARE YOU SELECTIVE WHEN SHIPPING?

Yes and no? I can honestly see a lot of ships working with my muse ( surprising, considering who I’m writing ), given the other muse puts time and effort into helping Light tear her walls down and actually trust. She may be emotionally constipated, but she’s also so fiercely loyal and protective.

HOW FAR DO STEAMY MOMENTS HAVE TO GO BEFORE THEY ARE CONSIDERED NSFW?

I think when there’s heavy petting and/or clothing starts to come off. Generally when anatomical terms start coming into play, too. Sometimes I don’t throw under a read more early enough because idk when to do the read more thing.

Hell yes! Also, I generally don’t practice exclusivity. Everyone’s interpretations are so different and great, and I don’t want to limit myself or my partners.

I think Tidus/Yuna is my canon OTP in all of FF. I tend to waffle on Serah/Snow, but as long as that fucker finally marries her, I’m willing to forgive the big idiot. Fang/Vanille because you can’t tell me they aren’t gay af ( if you’re a Fang or Vanille who doesn’t ship it, that’s cool, but man; they gay in my book ). Squall/Rinoa. Cloud/Aerith ( though I think this is mostly nostalgia; it was my first ship for Cloud; when I replay it, I probably won’t give af about Cloud with either Tifa or Aerith ).
